I lost my Akismet plugin that keeps the comment spam at bay. In the last 10 minutes, I’ve got 52 spam comments. Until I get this fixed, I’ve turned off commenting. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Posting code? Use <pre> tags for VBA and <code> tags for inline.
We’re back, I think.
May I recommend a couple of plugins that would help with spam? Search the plugin repo for:
NoSpamNX
Bad Behavior
NoSpamNX adds hidden fields to the comment form. Spambots fill them out and get blocked. Real people never see them. Best part, you don’t have to make any changes to your theme.
Bad Behavior checks incoming traffic for various signatures common to spammers, such as trying to send POST requests directly to your comments, bad referers, injection attacks, known spam IPs, and so on. Reading the logs you will be amazed at how much crap is being blocked.
Along with Akismet, these two plugins have slowed the spam trickle down to maybe 1-2 spam comments a week.
I thought my Akismet plug-in was doing a bad job, resulting in a flood of spam comments in the moderation list. Today I discovered that the plug-in was gone! I’ve reinstalled it, and things are looking better already.
Why would a plug-in disappear?
In tried to update Akismet but it failed half way through. I then tried to update it manually, but the folder was locked. Eventually Jake had to fix it for me.
I’ve never had one disappear, but I think if you update wordpress it can disable plug-ins that aren’t compatible. Did you upgrade?
Haven’t upgraded since the blog reconstruction, and Akismet wasn’t in the plug-in list. Maybe I just forgot to re-install it, when the blog was back up and running.
I doubt that Debra. You would have definitely noticed if it wasn’t there – the spammers are relentless. Let me know if you ever figure it out.
