7 yards ÷ 4 dresses

We want a unit rate where
1 is in the denominator, 
so we divide top and bottom by 4.

7÷4= 1.75
_
4÷4=1.
Therefore, Kate used 1.75 yards per one dress (1.75 yds. p/ d)
