What were the major factors contributing to u.s. territorial expansion in the 1840s?

The expansion was initiated by the depression of 1837. People heard that there was more fertile soil in Oregon. Texas was also annexed. The Americans won the Mexican War and gained new territory. Gold rushes created expansion as well. The new trade routes with Japan and China also created more expansion.
