During the summer months for the northern hemisphere (the upper half of the earth), the earth is tilted on the axis such that the northern hemisphere is closer to the sun. This is why it experiences more hotter months because of the greater exposure to sunlight. The US is in the northern hemisphere which is why the US has summer months in June, July, and August.
