The European nations had to grant freedom to most of their colonies as the war left many of them in bad condition. They had lost a lot of money and soldiers and their countries were also mostly in ruin. They couldn't afford to keep their colonies, especially the ones who wanted independence and were fighting for it, so they simply freed them.
